Because it has
always been my intention to describe events, and references precisely,
I am addressing
some inaccuracies that may bias a new reader.
- ACTH therapy was administered
during an episode, not after, p69-70 and p125.
- The definition of spontaneous
(Webster’s Dictionary) - in physiology, is the
tendency toward
activity of tissue, without apparent stimulus
and should
not be confused with instantaneous - immediate, without a perceptible
lapse in time.
- Disease and healing activity
in ms occurs with no obvious trigger.
- How I balance my activity
and rest is described on pages
64, 111, 125, 127,
139, 143, 152, 184, 224, and 249!
Of many accounts
of my personal rehabilitation program, based on physiotherapy,
one of the few times
I went past my limit is selected for description!
We all know that
exceeding the body’s personal limit can result in stiffness and fatigue.
- The research I found is
the basis for my beliefs that myelin can repair itself -
Page 22 describes
a visit to the medical library -
I
understand practically nothing that I read, but I can't stop. I am driven.
If I read enough, and think enough about the material, surely I will
comprehend something. I make notes, send for even more reprints,
and finally stop shaking as I turn the pages.
In the 1966 volume of the journal Neurology, I found an article
titled
"Regeneration of myelin in multiple sclerosis," by Irwin Feigin
and Nina Popoff.
... they found evidence of repair in MS plaques of damage.
- Page 23 describes
finding research by Mary Bartlett Bunge et al 1961
on adult cats
(large mammal class like humans.)
... first sign of myelin repair was observed after 19 days;
by 64 days all the nerve damage was thinly repaired.
- Comparing histories clouds
the issue because we cannot compare extent of damage,
nor effect
of personal decisions on management.
Extensive research
using autopsies, and MRI has shown that our physical condition
is not
related to disease/healing activity.
Because I am
aware of research on remyelination and healing,
I have strategies
for recovery, to speed healing and recovery.
- MS runs course,
again, not my theory, but solid research that I reference on
pages 191,
195, 196, and, 198. References pp263-274.
- Remission - There
is remission in disease activity, that we cannot see,
and a plateau in
condition that we can see, and we label as remission.
Extensive research
using autopsies, and MRI has shown that physical condition
is not related
to disease/healing activity.
- More permanent damage
- yes indeed, permanent damage does occur, my MRI confirms that.
However, the nervous
system can be re-patterned for desired activities, because it is plastic,
not hard-wired.
We re-pattern our
nervous system to play a musical instrument, or when we learn to type,
or visit a friend who has moved ...
and we can re-pattern
our nervous system to overcome damage, when we are aware that we can engage
in these actions.
Research has shown
repair of nerves IN plaques of damage.See Feigin & Popoff above ...
- Progressive decline,
again, the words are not mine, but those of Ivan Draper 1974, page 196.
I merely reflect
on this information, and relate it to my experience.
- Sometimes ms does progress
in spite of all mental and physical efforts.
Indeed, I describe
my own experience with decline in spite of all best efforts on page
84.
I describe
my slow recovery on page 86. The disease process is cyclic.
A difference
can be made when people are introduced to strategies for healing and recovery.
Letters from
my readers support the importance of such information.
- The mind-body connection
is not something mysterious. We all have that potential.
We hear of
it as psychneuroimmunology - the mind and nervous system
working to
give the body strength. See Foreword page x.
I listened
to my intuition (spirit), and believed (mind), that I could
recover (body).
- Our beliefs, values and
attitudes are critically important to our well-being.
What if I had
believed the predictions made in 1967? (beliefs)
What if I had
ignored my children? (values)
What if I had
been negative? (attitudes).
What if I had
not made an effort to recover? Would I even be here?
- I believe we are at a
turning point in health care philosophy.
I see more of us
learning that we can harness the healing energy of the spirit (psycho)
and
mind (neuro) to protect
the body (immunology).
Expressed another
way: the body, mind and spirit can work together
to protect the health
and well-being of the whole self.
- I continue to study NeuroLinguistic
Programming, NLP, and the Quantum Biophysics of healing
to learn more
about harnessing inner resources for health
and wellness.
- I am indebted to new
Pathways, for the opportunity to share
the success of my
experience applying positive research.
We can either choose
to repeat past strategies that have proven inadequate, or,
we can examine new
ideas for wellness. The choice is ours to make.
Recent books by Bruce Lipton
(Biology of Belief), Candace Pert (Molecules of Emotion)
and Lynne McTaggart(The Field)
share the latest research.
